Biography
⇢ The year was 1987 when David and
Jennifer Cowen welcomed their last child, and only girl into the family. Her
father was on his second year cardiology fellowship, and her mother had recently
started working at a law firm. Their lives weren't by any means the most typical
-- their parents were constantly busy, and for the first few years of their
lives, the children spent the majority of their time with their grandparents. As
they got older, after school activities took up most of their time, and Alana
realized that the least amount of time she spent at home, the less stressful her
day was. Her relationship with her mother was never the greatest - she was the
only girl, and Jennifer had wished she was more like her. Alana on the other
hand could never picture herself being like her mother. She needed a lot more
excitement to her life, and the idea of spending her days in a courtroom or
drowning in paperwork never interested her.
⇢ When Alana was 14 years old, her parents broke
the news that they had decided to foster a child. At first it took some
adjustment, but before long Alana found herself getting close to the 14 year old
boy. He stayed with them for about a year, but eventually her parents decided it
wasn't working for them. It was a decision that Alana never understood. In her
eyes he was her brother, and how they could simply send him away was something
she was never able to forget. Her relationship with her mother had already been
strained, and that decision made it just about impossible for them to ever have
a close relationship. Her relationship with her father, while not as strained,
also suffered.
